French Silver Smallsword
- Dated: circa 1785
The hilt of silver-gilt, the grip and knucklebow with roped borders and the arms of the hilt similarly roped, the pommel, grip, knucklebow, sleeve and upper side of the shell all with chiselled grounds set with oval and disc-shaped panels of small gold stars on a dark blue enamel ground.
The panels themselves encircled with borders of brilliants, brilliants also decorate the sides of the grip, border the upper side of the shell and form discs on the grip, upper side of the shell and quillon terminal. The lower side of the shell with a roped border and a chiselled ground decorated with polished ovals and discs containing florets. The blued and gilded blade of hollow triangular section.
While the style of chiselling and the use of brilliants exhibited on our sword appears typical of the best quality of late-eighteenth century French small-swords – there being similar examples of both styles of decoration on small-sword hilts in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, the startling and very attractive use of star-filled enamel panels, themselves encircled by borders of brilliants, is a very unusual and consequently rare feature.
